“Here in my car I feel safest of all”(Part Four)

Bittersweet Symphony – The Verve

Ah the sound of the summer from 1997. Working for a dreadful company, and desperately looking forward to our Family Holiday to Wales. A hire car driven by my wife….picked me up from the station…She drives, I DJ, that has always been our role. The Extended version of this song started the tape, and it still makes me feel relief, and freedom every time I hear it. It’s a great song for all the other reasons, but it has a special place in my heart as a result of this holiday….In fact a lot of the playlist from that holiday makes it on here…

Hometown Unicorn – Super Furry Animals

Not the most obvious of singalongs! However, we seem to have developed a four part family harmony to this song. SFA can do no wrong, and this song was made even more poignant when I took my eldest to see them live at Brixton a few years back. We thankfully refrained from doing the harmonising….Brixton wasn’t ready

There She Goes – The La’s

Another classic “Sound of the Summer” song. The La’s released one album and then called it a day, but what an album and what a song. It still get played to death on pretty much any playlist I create even now. Check out the album too, it has some real gems on it.

Connection – Elastica

Ah Britpop…so much to answer for. We liked this because of the vomiting. It’s still a really cool song, and I always felt they were underrated because of the lack of penises in the band (No disrespect to Justin!). The first album in particular was as good as anything that many of the male dominated bands were doing at the time, and still stands a listen even now.

Whatever – Oasis

This song seems to be a forgotten one by Oasis. Yes of course it sounds like the Beatles, but that’s a good thing right? It’s a feel good, singalong of a song, and again, fits perfectly on any summer holiday playlist.
