“Here in my car I feel safest of all”(Part Three)

Continuing on my magical playlist journey…..

Beautiful Ones – Suede

Another song from 1996, and the second single from their slightly more uplifting and commercial album “Coming Up”. I loved this album when it was released. After Bernard Butler left, it was widely expected that Suede would collapse. I thought the album was a triumphant and rather joyous affair. Anyway…back to the song…It’s a jaunty little romp with a catchy chorus, typical Brett lyrics, and enough of a hint of melancholy to keep the average Suede fan happy….It also, and this is crucial, has a lovely “La-la-la” section towards the end, which is perfect for young voices to join in with…

The Fun Lovin’ Criminal – Fun Lovin’ Criminals

This is one of those songs that make peoples heads bob. I like it, and although it’s a little repetitive, and I don’t really know what Huey is singing about, it just works.

The Moon is Blue – Colourbox

Released in 1985, I’m not sure how this ended up being dragged out of mothballs for my playlists. An electro pop classic from the little known 4AD act Colourbox, it has one of my favourite vocals on it courtesy of Lorita Grahame. A bit of a jazzy feel for me, and a really catchy song with one of those excellent stops in it, that mean we all smugly look at eachother when we come back in at the same time on vocals. Should have been a massive hit, and will feature on the soundtrack of any film I make!

There is a light that Never goes out – Morrissey (Live)

It still hurts writing about this man. He put the light out. For completeness though, it has to be on here. One of the finest songs ever written, and rather clunky without the light touch of Johnny Marr, this is still a great version, and the one that the girls used to openly weep to whilst singing it.

Laid – James

This is a great song, and one which I am sure we improve every time we sing along to, especially on the falsetto section. I saw James supporting the Smith in london in 1982 at Brixton, and loved them. They still create some great songs, and this one is one of the very best. Produced by Brian Eno of all people, and deliciously rude, it appears to be about a stalker, and I love it even more for that fact
